Two members of the Advanced Computing and Information Systems Laboratory (ACIS), Dr. José A.B. Fortes, Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Michael Elliott, PhD student, attended the 40th Annual Meeting of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) in Lawrence, KS from May 27 – May 31, 2025.

Michael Elliott presented “Connecting online biodiversity databases via community-driven multi-agent AI systems.”

“[We] presented iChatBio (ichatbio.org), a chatbot designed to assist biodiversity researchers with discovering and exploring scientific data and derived information. Appling the AI intelligence of state-of-the-art OpenAI models, iChatBio can understand users’ requests to find and retrieve biodiversity occurrence records, media, and literature from idigbio.org, gbif.org, inaturalist.org, and biodiversitylibrary.org, in addition to using Internet search engines. As a single point of contact for many different online biodiversity services, iChatBio brings together diverse but thematically-related information into a shared space to help researchers answer broader research questions.”–Michael Elliott
