Michael Elliott won the 1st Place Student Prize at the TDWG Conference (Biodiversity Information Standards) Oct 9 – 13, 2023 in Hobart, Australia. The talk was titled “Using ChatGPT with Confidence for Biodiversity-Related Information Tasks.” Michael is a PhD student in the ACIS lab under the supervision of Dr. José A. B. Fortes at the University of Florida.

The CENTRA 6 Conference: AI in the Edge-Cloud-HPC Continuum was held at Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana from September 12 – 15, 2023. Dr. José Fortes, Director of the ACIS Lab., and  Michael Elliott, PhD student, presented at the conference.

Several members of the ACIS Laboratory attended the iDigBio Digital Data Conference in Tempe, AZ June 5 – June 7, 2023 and a one-day iDigBio retreat on June 8, 2023. The conference leveraged digital data for conservation, ecology, systematics and novel biodiversity research.

Dr. José Fortes, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, has been named winner of the 2021 SEC Faculty Achievement Award for the University of Florida, the SEC announced on Thursday.

Congratulations to Saumitra Aditya, ACIS Lab’s most recent PhD graduate who defended his dissertation on “Software Defined Overlay Network and Workload Orchestration in Social Network Based Edge Infrastructure for Smart Communities” on July 15th, 2020 at 12:00 noon.

In two recently awarded grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Dr. Renato Figueiredo of the Advanced Computing and Information Systems (ACIS) Laboratory is applying edge computing, virtual networks, and open-source software to advance the state-of-the-art in the nascent field of ecological forecasting, specifically lake ecology forecasting.

Professor and AT&T Eminent Scholar José A. B. Fortes was recently notified in a letter from University of Florida President Kent Fuchs that he is the recipient of the 2019-20 Teacher/Scholar of the Year Award, the highest faculty honor at UF.

Congratulations to Ícaro Alzuru, ACIS Lab’s most recent PhD graduate who defended his dissertation on “Human-Machine Extraction of Information from Biological Collections”, on Monday, March 30th at 8:30 am.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Keichi Takahashi visited the ACIS lab in Larsen Hall during the week of November 11th, 2019 to discuss collaborative research with ACIS faulty and student.
